Changes with Aging

Physical and cognitive changes with aging can include physical flexibility, response times, changes in vision or hearing, and more. However, being aware of those changes, assessing their impact and participating in driver training can help older adults continue to drive safely.

Arriving safely is not just about good vision, but a host of other factors. For most people, the following will be affected as an individual ages:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Cognition
  • Memory
  • Physical Condition
  • Reaction time
  • Strength and flexibility
  • Range of motion

For some people, the following may affect the individual’s ability to drive safely:

  • Dementia, Alzheimer’s
  • Medical Conditions
  • Medications

For more information on these changes, see the Warning Signs of Unsafe Driving page.
